The global fast-food chain has taken down a holiday commercial created using Artificial Intelligence after facing considerable criticism on social media.

The short spot was produced via AI video tools and was first published on the YouTube channel for the Dutch branch of McDonald's on 6 December.

Audience Criticism and Removal

Following its publication, viewers on social media criticized the use of AI in the commercial. Several called it "disturbing" and "awkwardly stitched together".

"This moment represents an important lesson as we investigate the appropriate utilization of Artificial Intelligence," commented a representative from McDonald's Netherlands.

The advert was produced for McDonald's by Netherlands-based agency TBWA\Neboko and American production company The Sweetshop. It showed a series of situations that often go badly during the festive season, with the theme "not the most wonderful time of the year".

The Phenomenon of AI in Advertising

Commercials that incorporate AI-created content have emerged as a growing trend among prominent companies, especially for the holiday period.

  • Another beverage giant has recently released consecutive AI-generated Christmas commercials.
  • Technical Challenges: As videos made with current AI video tools are more likely to become unstable the more extended they are, the majority of such clips tend to be roughly six to 10 seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The ad also sparked concerns about automation in the advertising sector, with some critics noting it could reduce work for actors.

Defense from the Production Company

After the video's removal, The Sweetshop's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, defended the project.

Bridge claimed, the development required "seven weeks" and involved producing "countless iterations" which were then shaped during the edit "in the same way we would on any standard production".

"This was not an AI trick," Bridge asserted. "The result was a proper commercial."

Mixed Public Reception

While the Dutch McDonald's commercial was predominantly criticized, the reception for some AI-assisted holiday ads has been divisive.

For instance, a recent AI-generated holiday spot from another major brand according to analysis received a 61% "positive feedback" from the public.

However, other businesses have likewise encountered criticism for employing the technique in their campaigns. Italian brand Valentino, for example, was criticized for advertisements that some called "lazy" and "uncanny".

The episode underscores the ongoing debate within the marketing and creative sectors about the balance between technological innovation and human craftsmanship.
