🔗 Share this article From Acclaim to Fury: Conservative Reaction to Jeffrey Epstein File Release is Mixed. Conservative responses to the partial disclosure of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how heavy redactions portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light. Administration Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole Justice Department officials justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a President or the Justice Department been this transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo describing the redaction process. Concerns Prompted by Redactions While Trump's identity and likeness appear in some of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt serious concerns about the information may be hidden beneath them. Some Republicans immediately demanded greater transparency. “The public are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene. Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the law, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he added. A Faction of Conservative Figures Swing In Support of the Release However, some conservative commentators and Trump loyalists swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions. The disclosed materials—from a DOJ run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are completely redacted, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out. But a few do not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, enabled some rightwing figures to launch the attack. “This is quite ironic how the Democrats wrongly claimed Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer. “Recently released documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.” Former President Campaign Releases Response Bill Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been concealing these documents for an extended period only to dump them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement. “This is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and conceal permanently. So they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added. Overall Rightwing Commentary Remains Subdued Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was comparatively muted following the disclosure, particularly when compared with the vociferous demands for transparency that preceded the legislative approval to pass a bill mandating the documents' release. The commentator, who not long ago accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal advocates for a full release. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing influencers were provided physical folders of files that included little previously unseen data.
